Another quarterback domino in the NFL offseason has fallen.

The Washington Redskins agreed Thursday to acquire Case Keenum from the Denver Broncos in a trade, a person with knowledge of the talks told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal could not become official the start of the new league year on March 13.

The Broncos will receive a sixth-round pick from the Redskins but also send back a seventh-round selection as part of the deal. Denver will also pay $3.5 million of the $7 million Keenum was guaranteed for 2019.

Keenum, 31, provides a stopgap solution for the Redskins to compete with Colt McCoy should incumbent starter Alex Smith not be ready to return. Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula on Nov. 18 against the Houston Texans and underwent multiple surgeries.

Keenum became expendable in Denver after the team agreed to acquire veteran Joe Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens.

In his lone year as starter for the Broncos, Keenum threw for 3,890 yards and 18 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. The Redskins will be his fourth team in as many seasons and fifth since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Houston in 2012.
