Heavy winter storm moving toward New England
The chaotic storm that brought snow, strong winds and travel headaches to the Midwest is likely to drop heavy snow on parts of New England by Tuesday, with a foot or more possible in northern New Hampshire and Maine. Temperatures will plummet from the Ohio Valley to the East Coast. Travelers heading home from the long Thanksgiving weekend in the Midwest were met with a plethora of canceled or delayed flights Sunday and Monday, with Chicago airports experiencing some of the worst disruptions. Nationwide on Monday, more than 1,600 flights were canceled and 6,325 delayed. The weather led most major airlines to waive change fees.
Final Senate seat to be chosen in Mississippi runoff election
Mississippi voters go to the polls Tuesday in the Senate runoff election between incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy. While Espy is the underdog in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat since 1982, Hyde-Smith is facing blowback over a comment she made Nov. 2 while praising a longtime friend. “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row,” she said. The remark quickly went viral, with critics saying it conjured up images of lynchings. Espy is African-American. Hyde-Smith later apologized for the remark. The candidates were forced into a runoff after neither won a majority in the Nov. 6 election.

Chicago cops accused of covering up Laquan McDonald shooting go on trial
Three Chicago police officers are set to go to trial Tuesday on charges they conspired to cover up a fellow officer’s actions in the police shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. The trial of former Detective David March, former Officer Joseph Walsh and Officer Thomas Gaffney comes two months after former Officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated battery in the shooting death of the black teen. The officers were among several who allegedly reported that McDonald acted aggressively toward them and posed an immediate threat. A police dashcam video of the incident contradicts those claims. It shows McDonald turning away from officers when Van Dyke began shooting. The video, which played a crucial part in Van Dyke’s trial, will be central in the cover-up trial as well.
